Death of the Modern Blockbuster
If there's one lesson from the 2023 Box Office, it's that the 'Modern' Blockbuster formulas doesn't work. If the Old Kings are dead, that begs the question: Who's the new King? what is the new dominant trend taking over? And most importantly, what are the new Rules for our Billion Dollar Blockbusters?

Fixing the MCU's Biggest Problem

This year, Marvel has released both one of their best films ever (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3) as well as their all time worst (Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania). Why the Way of Water is Better Than Avatar

Written and Narrated by Jonathan Burdett Edited by: @LoverboyMedia Despite being floored by Avatar as an Experience, I've never been fully on board this franchise, nor excited about Cameron spending over a decade turning this into a Serial Franchise. Jurassic World Dominion | The Lost Art of Blocking and Editing

Jurassic World Dominion is bad, as in 'bad for a Jurassic Park Sequel', which is a pretty low bar. I do not have a problem with "being too much" But i have problems with the quality of both, "how is done" and "What it shows". Problems one by one : 1) Wanda wanted new kids, why not to go to the universe were she had kids and they are killed? -> will be the most inteligent to do, at least it could have ended that way even if she has not done it because was too "blinded" to do it. That way they fix 2 universes at once. Eternals -> Totally stupid in every possible way. 1-> if they are robots then they cannot simply disobey, 2-> if the one that is malfunctioning greatly is able to kill its enemy the way it does on the movie, why did not do it sooner?, 3->By the end you notice all of them are crazy, 4->Does not make sense to have to destroy a planet in order to live. Conclusion the entire movie makes No Kind Of Sense. And even worst lets assume was all as they said, It will be stupid to Protect 10 billion people for the sake of a new universe. It is the same as a vegan "I will kill a baby because to let it live will need to much food and that will kill the life on earth" where here the animals are the humans and the celestials is the baby. And they fully betrayed what they required to do. She-Hulk. Too meta, because why is she able to talk to camera and the CGI sucks big time, it is clearly they go from "good for movies" to "cheap for tv", because if they use the same amount of money then they sucked big. The rest mostly have problems of "being too woke". I am watching superhero movies, so if you want to put drama, do not make it the center piece, and deliver what you are called. The ONLY one that from my point of view as "OK" not really a masterwork as before but "OK enough" was Loki. And well, Guardians of the galaxy were never the best so its expected but Thor, should have been better. (not sure how but should). I liked (partially) Black Widow and Spiderman, but spiderman has always have troubles because being inexperienced. So he always makes too many mistakes. (he is too good for his own good and does not notice he is overwelmed by his enemies so, if he is as "nice" to them as he is they will always kill inocents). Dr Who was 100% right and in the end they will be sent to their own reality and die the SAME way they did before so, what the hell was the point to free them, just to give them false hope? And the rest tired me because all the "Woke" phylosophy truly. I want to see a movie to have fun not to see black people being better, or lesbians or gays or anything like that. In that way make it realistic, LGTB has only 1 or 2% of population so you want to show that then show it in 2% of your movies not 100%. (at least will only ruing 2% of the movies and not the rest)

In my opinion surprise villains are a good idea, but 90% of the time they aren’t done well at all. For example, the show invincible has a surprise villain that is the star of the show. Schafrillas productions has a good video on this.

The muscles flex and move when they walk, the animatronics are more lifelike than ever before, and the visuals are in a different galaxy.

It's an interesting take, but I don't think the biggest weakness is that the characters are too disconnected. Early MCU outings show that they don't (and frankly usually shouldn't) be connected while in the stage of building the characters for the audience. Unfortunately, many of the characters lack a core that audiences would cling to and resonate with so that when the characters are brought together people want to see how they'll interact. Iron Man and Captain America did a good job of building the hero by putting them in such stark contrast with their villain which, I believe, is one of the reasons they swept the MCU in terms of popularity for a long time. The trope of the BBEG having the same powers as the main character but being evil is really good for pointing out why you love your character. Red Skull vs. Rogers is the battle of whether given power is the elevation of a man or his burden to bear for his neighbour. Stane vs. Stark is the desire to value profit and power vs. doing the right thing. Each character was given an incorruptible core that remained when the chips were down and kept us loving the characters. Just an opinion though, I've kind of fallen off after the characters I loved dropped off or were used as setups for other characters so I might just be a bit jaded. Admittedly, I don't think I'm alone in thinking that the new cast of characters is a bit bland or even unlikable so I really don't pay attention. It's mostly just Spiderman or Loki left for me. (Shang-Chi kinda slapped though)

I dont really like when stories get multiversal in terms of power scaling. It artificially increases the power of everything to a point where it makes light of thinfs beforehand. For example, kang the conquerer and ultron. Ultron wanted to take control of the planet and wipe out the avengers. I can understand this villain and it makes sense why he believes the way he does. I couldnt even tell you anything about kang because the post end game movies dont give me good faith. Also i dont understand any of his motives. Side note, when they showed infinity stones as paper weights in loki, that completely made me upset. What was the point of anything before hand when power lile this exists?

people are saying that the MCU should come to an end i disagree as MCU is mainly based off of the comics and there are still many that havent been adapted. My personal biggest problem with new MCU is that they are now prioritizing cheap laughs that get younger audiences to giggle and enjoy the movies, thats were i personally think the problem lies look at the first few MCU movies they are rather serious action adventure movies with a quick laugh here and there to give a bit of fun to the movies but they were all inherantly serious as to keep the looming threat an actual threat and not just something we know the good guys will defeat. I think with all the cheap laughs they are putting in now can lead to fans of the older movies getting taken out of the experience and making these movies seam like they are trying to make comedies rather than serious action movies which is what brought most of us in. but thats just my 2 cents (sorry for bad english)

When I do my annual marvel marthon re-run (just finished my latest one) - I always watch everything and then stop at Endgame.. That is the true end to Marvel in my eyes. Almost anything after is just money grabbing bloat-content that doesn't interest me. Excepetions for me include the Loki series & Guardians of the Galaxy 3. Loki was fun and it was very well done, especially the character development & overall casting - not a completely satisfying ending or "third act", but good nonetheless. GotG 3 was basically the 'Rocket' movie and was fun, satisfying & true to marvel.
